How Morwell Bowling Club Reopened in Months, Not Years

Testimonial from Teena Johnson, General Manager

Morwell Convention & Reception Centre Inc.

Morwell Bowling Club

A temporary structure that helped a Victorian club reconnect, reopen and keep moving forward.

When Morwell Bowling Club was destroyed by fire in August 2024, the loss went far beyond the building itself.

The club was a place where members met, friendships were formed, families celebrated and the wider Morwell community came together.

Suddenly, that place was gone.

While plans for a permanent rebuild would inevitably take time, Morwell Bowling Club needed a way to restore operations and welcome its community back much sooner.

Australian Temporary Structures worked with the club to create a temporary facility that could provide the space it needed to reopen while planning for its permanent future continued.

By December 2024, only a few months after the fire, the doors were open again.

More than a temporary building

For Teena Johnson, General Manager of Morwell Bowling Club, the project was about much more than providing additional floor space.

"From the beginning, their team understood that this was not simply a temporary building project. It was about helping a community organisation reopen, restoring a sense of normality and giving our members somewhere to belong again."

ATS worked closely with the club to create a practical and welcoming temporary venue.

The project required flexibility, communication and the ability to respond as requirements developed, all while working towards one overriding objective:  getting Morwell Bowling Club operating again.

Back through the doors in December

Only months after the fire, Morwell Bowling Club's temporary facility opened in December 2024.

For the club, it represented an important milestone in its recovery.

"Being able to welcome our members and community back through the doors was an incredibly emotional and important moment for everyone involved."

The temporary building has since enabled Morwell Bowling Club to continue providing:

  • Meals and hospitality

  • Entertainment

  • Social activities

  • Bowls events

  • Community functions

  • A place for members and visitors to come together

Importantly, the facility has also helped the club continue trading, support local jobs and maintain its connection with the community while the permanent rebuild progresses.

Keeping a community connected

One of the lessons from Morwell is that when an organisation loses access to its facilities, the impact isn't confined to the building.

  • People are affected.

  • Staff are affected.

  • Revenue is affected.

  • Customers, members and the wider community are affected.

  • Creating replacement space quickly can therefore become an important part of business continuity and recovery.

As Teena explains:

"The temporary building has allowed us to continue offering meals, entertainment, social activities, bowls events and community functions. It has helped protect local jobs, maintain connections and keep the spirit of the Morwell Bowling Club alive during one of the most difficult periods in our history."

For any organisation facing disruption, rebuilding, renovation or the urgent need for additional space, I would recommend considering Australian Temporary Structures

Temporary space. A very real purpose.

Temporary structures don't need to be viewed simply as short-term buildings.

For organisations undergoing a rebuild, renovation or redevelopment, they can provide valuable transitional space that allows operations to continue while a permanent solution is being developed.

They can also provide additional capacity where an organisation has simply outgrown its existing facilities or needs more room to respond to changing demand.

At Morwell Bowling Club, the temporary facility has provided the club with the ability to keep moving forward.

Teena acknowledges that operating from a temporary structure is different from operating from a permanent clubhouse and that there have been adjustments along the way. But importantly, it provided what the club needed most: the ability to continue operating.

Working through change

Projects of this nature rarely remain static.

Requirements evolve. Operational priorities change. Challenges emerge as a project progresses.

For Morwell Bowling Club, having a team willing to work through those changes was an important part of the experience.

"Australian Temporary Structures approached the project with professionalism, patience and a genuine willingness to understand our needs. Their team remained responsive and worked with us to find practical solutions as our requirements developed."

It is this flexibility that makes modular and temporary structures particularly valuable when organisations are navigating periods of change.

A recommendation from Morwell Bowling Club

Perhaps the strongest measure of the project is what Morwell Bowling Club would say to another organisation facing a similar challenge.

Teena says:

"For any organisation facing disruption, rebuilding, renovation or the urgent need for additional space, I would recommend considering Australian Temporary Structures."

She continues:

"Their work gave our club the opportunity to reopen, continue trading and remain connected with the community while we plan for our permanent future."

Built for what's next

Morwell Bowling Club's permanent rebuilding journey continues.

In the meantime, its temporary facility is doing exactly what it was created to do, giving the club a place to operate, serve its members and remain part of the community.

As Teena puts it:

"The temporary building may not be our final destination, but it has become an important chapter in the Morwell Bowling Club's story. It represents resilience, recovery and the determination of our members, staff and community to rebuild together."

And perhaps most importantly:

"We are grateful to Australian Temporary Structures for helping us create a place where our club could continue to grow, serve and belong."

Could additional space help keep your organisation moving?

Not every requirement starts with a disaster.

Your organisation may be planning a refurbishment, rebuilding an existing facility, experiencing growth, preparing for redevelopment or simply needing additional operational space sooner than conventional construction can provide it.

Australian Temporary Structures provides flexible modular structure solutions for organisations requiring additional space across sport, community, hospitality, commercial, government and other sectors.

Whether the requirement is temporary, transitional or longer-term, ATS can work with you to understand your site, operational requirements and timeframe and develop an appropriate solution.

MORE SPACE. MORE POSSIBILITY.
