Modular Aviation Infrastructure Supporting Live Airport Operations

Airports are among the most complex operational environments in the world. Unlike traditional construction projects, terminal upgrades must be completed while thousands of passengers continue moving through the airport every day.

To support this challenge, Auckland Airport introduced Zone T, a temporary international check-in facility designed to maintain passenger processing capacity during major terminal redevelopment works.

NZ Temporary Structures (NZTS), part of Australian Temporary Structures (ATS), delivered the modular terminal solution, providing a fast, scalable, and operationally efficient environment capable of supporting high passenger throughput.

Why Was Auckland Airport Zone T Required?

Auckland Airport is currently undergoing a significant transformation program aimed at modernising and centralising its departures experience.

As construction progresses, maintaining uninterrupted airport operations remains critical. Zone T was developed to provide a temporary check-in environment while redevelopment works take place within the existing international terminal.

The solution enables Auckland Airport to:

  • Maintain seamless passenger processing

  • Reduce operational disruption during construction

  • Support evolving self-service check-in systems

  • Continue servicing international travellers efficiently

This type of temporary terminal infrastructure is increasingly being adopted globally as airports modernise aging facilities while maintaining operational continuity.

The Modular Terminal Solution

NZTS supplied and installed a purpose-built Cargo Structure configured specifically for aviation use.

Project Specifications

  • 20m x 55m clear-span structure

  • 5.3m side height

  • Approx. 660m² operational footprint

  • Connected to terminal infrastructure via dedicated walkways

  • Designed to accommodate passengers servicing up to four wide-body aircraft simultaneously

The clear-span design created an open internal environment suitable for flexible check-in layouts, passenger circulation, and operational functionality.

Designed for High-Performance Airport Operations

Temporary airport facilities require more than speed of installation. They must also provide:

  • Reliable weather protection

  • Efficient passenger movement

  • Integration with existing airport infrastructure

  • Safe and compliant access pathways

  • Flexibility for changing operational requirements

The Cargo Structure system provided Auckland Airport with a modular solution capable of performing in a demanding live-airport environment while construction activities continued nearby.

Supporting the Future of Airport Development

As passenger demand increases across Australia and New Zealand, airports are increasingly seeking infrastructure solutions that can respond quickly to operational pressures while supporting long-term expansion strategies.

Projects like Zone T demonstrate how modular construction can play a critical role in aviation infrastructure delivery, bridging the gap between immediate operational requirements and future terminal development.
